How this debt repayment calculator works
Enter your current balance, APR, and monthly payment. The calculator applies interest monthly, subtracts your payment, and repeats the process until the balance reaches zero. The result is an estimated number of months to repay, total interest paid, and a projected payoff date.
If you add a one-off extra payment, the calculator reduces your balance immediately and shows the time and interest saved. This makes it easy to compare different repayment strategies.
What's included in the calculation
The calculation includes interest based on your APR, monthly compounding, and a steady payment made once per month. It also supports an optional one-off extra payment to reduce the balance at the start.
It does not include late fees, promotional rates, balance transfer fees, or changes in APR. If your rate or payment varies, your real payoff date and interest total will differ.
Assumptions and rounding rules
Results assume your APR stays fixed, payments are made on time every month, and the extra payment (if any) is applied immediately. Totals are rounded to the nearest penny and displayed as rounded currency values.
If your payment does not cover monthly interest, the calculator will return an error and suggest a minimum payment needed to reduce the balance.
Worked examples
Example 1: A £5,000 balance at 18.9% APR with a £200 monthly payment takes about 32 months to repay, with total interest around £1,405. The payoff date is around October 2028.
Example 2: A £12,000 balance at 9.9% APR with a £350 payment takes about 40 months, with interest around £2,162. Adding a £500 extra payment reduces the term to about 38 months and saves roughly £194 in interest.
Example 3: A £2,500 balance at 29.9% APR with a £150 payment takes about 21 months, with total interest around £768 and a payoff around November 2027.
