Uses official UK tax rates for 2026/27 to compare two salaries side by side, showing the differences in gross pay, Income Tax, National Insurance, and net take-home pay.
How this salary comparison works
Enter two annual gross salaries and select the tax year. The calculator estimates take-home pay for each salary using the same Income Tax bands and National Insurance thresholds, then compares the results side by side. You can see differences in gross pay, deductions, and net pay.
This makes it easier to evaluate a pay rise or job offer based on real take-home pay rather than the headline salary figure alone.
What's included in the calculation
The comparison includes Income Tax and Class 1 National Insurance using the official UK thresholds for the selected tax year, plus a standard personal allowance. This gives a solid baseline for PAYE employees.
It does not include pension contributions, student loans, salary sacrifice, or taxable benefits. If those apply to one salary but not the other, adjust the gross figures or interpret the results accordingly.
Assumptions and rounding rules
Both salaries are calculated using the same tax year and a standard tax code in the England/Wales/NI region. Results are rounded to the nearest penny internally and shown as rounded currency values for readability.
If you have non-standard tax codes, multiple jobs, or different regions, the exact net difference may vary. Use the Take-Home Pay calculator for a more tailored view.
Worked examples
Example 1: Comparing £32,000 to £36,000 shows net pay of about £26,560 versus £29,440. The net difference is roughly £2,880 per year (£240 per month).
Example 2: Comparing £45,000 to £55,000 gives net pay of around £35,920 versus £42,457. The net difference is approximately £6,538 per year (£545 per month).
